You then have the remainder of the day to explore the rest of the zoo.

Abbotsford Convent
Beginning as a convent in the late 1800’s, this incredible location is now an arts and culture precinct and simply a beautiful place to explore. The grounds are great to roam, and the gothic building of the convent takes you back to the past. There are over 120 studios here, a gallery, restaurants, a radio station and a school.
Collingwood Children’s Farm
Just 5km away, still in the grounds of the Abbotsford Convent is a working farm. Kids can feed the chooks, milk a cow or ride a pony to get a taste of farm life while staying close to the city. The Farm Cafe serves hearty meals with a paddock-to-plate policy, with everything made from scratch using locally sourced ingredients.
Organ Pipes National Park
Located only 20 km from Melbourne are the 2.5-million-year-old basalt columns that look like organ pipes. They are impressive to say the least and you can also look at fossils and an array of native plants. Pack a picnic and spend a day walking the various trails and wonder at this striking creation of nature.
Welcome to Thornbury
This venue was once a car factory and is now a gigantic beer garden and food truck park. Food trucks are incredibly popular in Melbourne and with about 80 different trucks that rotate at the venue each month you are bound to find some favourites.
Old Melbourne Gaol
If you’re looking for something a little spooky then visit this historical building which stands as a monument to capital punishment. The most notorious prisoner put to death here was Ned Kelly and the history is quite amazing. You can actually go inside the cells, explore parts of the jail and go on a ghost tour, which is said to be visited by the 133 souls who still ‘reside’ here.
Heide Museum of Modern Art
One of the best places to go for modernism and contemporary Australian art, this museum is set on over 6 hectares of parklands and has 5 gallery spaces and 3 museum spaces. There is a gift shop and the addition of Heide Kitchen which features a diverse menu inspired by seasonal produce.
The Pumping Station
Part of the Scienceworks complex, the Victorian Pumping Station handled Melbourne’s sewage in the 1800’s. This is a really interesting place to learn about some of Melbourne’s past. Learning what it took to build the extensive tunnels and how the station operated is fascinating.
Indoor Skydiving
If you want something to get the adrenaline pumping then visit iFLY, Melbourne’s indoor skydiving centre. They create a true free-fall experience without actually having to jump out of a plane. You don’t even need a parachute because it’s carried out in a vertical wind tunnel.
